Anaphase is the third stage of mitosis:

  • The centromeres divide, causing the two sister chromatids to separate.
  • They are now classed as daughter chromosomes.
  • The microtubules forming the spindle fibres begin to retract, causing the daughter chromatids to migrate towards the poles.
